Announcing ‘The Long Haul to the Last Mile Ride’
Published by Crystal June 27th, 2007 in Long Haul to the Last Mile Ride, news & gossip, travel & touring.
On August 25, I’m riding my Vespa in the 140-mile Last Mile Ride, which starts and ends in Randolph, Vermont. Both my boyfriend Dwayne and I grew up in Vermont, and I’m riding in honor of his father Charles “Shod” McCullough, who died in February in the Garden Room of Gifford Memorial Hospital. The Last Mile Ride is to benefit Gifford’s end-of-life care, including the Garden Room, and it means the world to me to be able to ride in Shod’s memory and raise money for this cause. So far, I’ve raised nearly $2,000 $3,000 toward my $10,000 goal.
A few weeks ago, my friend Pascal and I started talking about how we’d like to ride from the DC area to Vermont before The Last Mile Ride on our scooters. Before we knew it, we were planning The Long Haul to the Last Mile Ride, an almost 600-mile scooter ride on mostly secondary and access roads from Maryland to Vermont the week before the Last Mile Ride.
The Long Haul symbolizes Shod’s journey and struggles in the last year of his life while he was fighting cancer. He was also a truck driver by trade, so a ‘long haul’ before the Last Mile Ride seems especially fitting.
One other scooter rider is joining us on the ride to Vermont - Susan from Colorado. Currently, we are still route planning, with some of the route directed to areas to visit local scooter groups along the way, and near some of our online scooter friends. We’ll be motel-hopping or camping, depending on where our route takes us. Our scooters range from 125 to 250 ccs, and we plan to take two to three days to arrive in Vermont. Then we’ll add another 140 miles doing the Last Mile Ride on August 25.
I look forward to sharing more about our adventure with you.

Crystal - I’m really jazzed about this ride!
Sorry my bike is too small for such a great ride. Glad you are going in company and hope you get great weather and a safe ride all the way. I’ll be looking forward to reading all about it.
This is really happening and I am really getting excited. A scootering vacation con fundraiser —what could be better!
I wish I had more vacation time. Looking forward to meeting up with you along the way!
I know you probably already know this but the jealousy won’t stop me from sharing my 2 cents - Don’t forget the Bethel Mountain Road/125 into Middlebury and the Ap gap from Bristol over to Mad River.
Crystal, Susan, and Pascal - have a wonderful ride! All of your scooter friends from around the country will be riding along in spirit and wishing you a perfectly glorious trip! Relax and enjoy the ride!! Here’s a big hug from New Mexico!!
