Vox Modular Helmet
The Vox modular helmet may not be an enigma if it sold for its full suggested list price of just under $400. But because it can be found for under $100, my first reaction was to eye it suspiciously and wonder, what the heck is wrong with this helmet?

I heard about the Vox Modular when Lisa sent me a lengthy review of the Vox a member posted on the Honda Reflex Yahoo scooter group. This reviewer is a long-time HJC Symax wearer, and gave the Vox an 8 out of 10 rating. He also plans to buy another one.

I’ve never worn a modular helmet, and at this price, I’m tempted to try it. I’m a glasses wearer, and that seems to be a major reason people buy them. My top reason for a modular is pretty simple: It sure would be nice to be able to pull over and drink some gatorade on a hot day without having to take off my helmet. Vox helmet closedI’m also fascinated by the internal sun visor that flips down when you need it and up out of the way when you don’t (you can see it in this animation). This isn’t an exclusive to the Vox (it seems to be a common feature with newer flip-up helmets), but it’s still cool. It also seems to have a lot of vents which would help with cooling. The price is lower than the one other pink modular I’ve found, the AFX FX-97 Modular iconthat usually sells for just over $100, and I like the solid color better than the AFX graphics.

You can buy the Vox Modular from SterlingTek.com for $99.99, but I found it through Amazon on sale for $78, even though it still ships from SterlingTek.com. Here are the direct links to the various sizes available on Amazon:

pink X-small | pink small | pink medium | pink large | pink X-large

The Vox Modular also comes in Yamaha Vino 125-matching blue, Vespa GTS-matching deep red, and everything-matching silver and black. Like all other modular helmets, the Vox is only DOT approved (not Snell). Since there seems to be only one seller of the Vox modular, you may not be able to find a local dealer where you can try it on before you buy, and replacement parts may be iffy, but at this price that may not be as much of a concern. Check SterlingTek’s return policy to see if it fits your needs.

I want it!!! Its beautiful! And not having to fight my sunglasses on through the hole in my full face helmet would be lovely!

  2. 2 Omily

OOH!!! I might just need one. bad.

I think I might have to have the (Vino) blue one and put red and white stars on it. That helmet just looks soooo cool.

Crystal–I just ordered one in blue to match my Vino 125 . His name is Lapis and I think it will be a perfect match. Thanks for the tip.

    Is it DOT rated?

  6. 6 Crystal

Yes, it is, as mentioned in my post.

Sad to say, I ordered this helmet in pink a couple of months ago. I’m sad because it didn’t fit right, and alas, I had to return it. It was a beautiful helmet…. unfortunately for us women, they only have one shell size–HUGE :(
I didn’t have any problems w/ the return, just lost my shipping charge, but the husband liked it so much, he bought one for himself in a very manly silver. Hopefully sterlingtek will come to realize that women need smaller shell sizes so they don’t look like they’re walking blow-pops :)

Ordered a red one, thanks for the info on this helmet. Went by how the HJC Symax fit to determine size (per mentioned review). Amazon does show a cheaper price, but after the over 20 dollar shipping (for standard) it ends up being less than a dollar off, without the free expedited shipping. Ordered direct instead.

Brian–I found the same and ordered direct as well.

Shawn–I don’t think this helmet is any larger than my two other FF helmet (Icon Alliance & Bieffe GR 1500) In fact the Bieffe is even an XS size and the outer shell on the Vox is just as small or smaller.

Crystal–Do any companies actually make smaller shelled helmets for women? Or do they just market the different patterns….. I suppose if someone’s wore a small enough size, you could get by with a child’s helmet.

Just purchased two of these….they really look good….this will be our first full face flip-up. I am in the process of attaching the headsets and will keep you informed on our experience.

Question: Where can we get replacement parts such as shields?

Couldn’t resist at all. Bought the blue in size XS (which is also listed as Child’s Large!). Fits my pinhead nearly perfect, perhaps a little snug pressing the cheeks. But rather comfy. Sterling-tek sold it on their own web site for $79.99, free 2 day FedEx ground shipping, no tax. I paid with PayPal. (Amazon will charge for shipping!) Came in a Vox box, nicely protected and with a useful brushed nylon-lined cloth drawstring carry bag. Great quality everywhere you look, including very plush interior, soft chin strap liner (chin strap has neato snap to keep the end from dangling past the D rings and slapping your chin), and very handy lever-operated (left hand lever on side of helmet) sun visor. The latter is useful and works fine with my prescription glasses,e ven sunglasses. Face shield that goes over the hideaway sun shield has good detentes to open and close and keep it where you put it. Substantial vents make the Vox tolerable in summer. Though helmet is not overly noisy at MetI speeds, I couldn’t say what happens over 40 mph. Surely muffles ordinary traffic noise as you ride along at street speed. I’m pleased, feel it is a value worth more than I paid, and a very handsome finish and construction. I feel safe and visibility is very good in it–meaning you can see enough from side to side in ample face shield space (optically perfect plastic) and you can be seen wearing it. My first helmet(a modular from GMax) is a delightful patriotic flag design with stars and stripes, also size XS. I am going to buy sticker reflective stars in red and white to continue the theme for this new bright blue Vox. Buy this helmet if you need a new modular or want to enjoy the protection of FF. Sizes seem to run true. Many nice features.

I bought this helmet a couple weeks ago… I was pleasantly surprised with the quality at the price I paid… Though I admit the fit and finish (especially with padding) on my Icon Aliance FF is better. I wanted a modular for long rides, so I could just flip open the front to take a sip of water.

Now I have a concern with the safety of this helmet. Yesterday I decided to ride my Honda Met to work giving the Vespa a rest. I placed the helmet on the Met’s floorboard as I was locking it up and retrieving my purse and etc from the trunk. I inadvertantly knocked the helmet off the floorboard and it hit the concrete at a height of about 8-10 inches. At first I thought shucks! I’ve christened my new helmet with a few scratches.

However I noticed that the face shield popped off on the side that fell, the scratches were very minimal so I thought no biggie I will just pop it back in place.

Not so, I later discovered that the black bracket that holds the face shield to the helmet broke. I was quite annoyed as I thought my new helmet was ruined. Later, I thought if it broke so easy falling only a few inches, what would have happened (God Forbid) If I was wearing the helmet.

I contacted Sterlingtek as I couldn’t find a web site for Vox Racing. The response was quick and I was told that over 10,000 helmets have been sold without a similiar incident. I was offered a new face shield. Nice, but that wouldn’t help since the face shield is fine its the bracket that is broken.

Even if I’m offered a replacement, I’d be hesitent to use the helmet. Not very confident of the proctection the helmet.

My Icon helmet has taking a dive more times that I care to say. Besides a few scratches all is intact and it has fallen from the seat of my Vespa (much higher than the floorboard of my Met). Which is why I put the new helmet on the floorboard.

Ooh, Nancy, sorry to read your post about the broken bracket. I think your damage is a fluke. Four days after I got the Vox I had it hanging off the handlebars of the Met by the chin strap, only held in one loop by the snap arrangement. Stupid to count on that plastic snap to bear the hanging weight of the helmet. The helmet dropped off the handlebars inadvertently and smacked the pavement pretty hard. Scratched the face shield, but it tiruned out to be above eye level when the shield is pulled down, and it made a paint-scraped blemish on the chin bar where the major impact must have been. The chinbar did not open,;it sstayed locked on impact. No bracket broke and nothing was non-functional after a fall from handlebar height. I still trust the helmet and I would offer that you should get a replacement if you can, and have more faith. Even a 10 inch fall that impacts with particular bad luck can cause a cracked bracket, but it does not impugn the safety elements that DOT tests for. Maybe I’m just too optimistic, but I think your bad experience was not a portent of bad quality. I’m wearing my Vox and when I’m not, I’m stowing it on the floorboard now!

There is a way to get these helmets in Canada, because Sterling Tek dosen’t sold out of USA even amazon ?

  16. 16 Soozn

I have this helmet in blue. I think it is an excellent value for the money and the inner visor is a really cool feature.
The one thing I do not like is that I find it is fairly noisy when I ride at speeds greater than 45 mph. I find a regular FF is quieter at those speeds.

For me, the Vox is a great helmet for in town travel, I like wearing it on our scooter group rides, because I can flip it up and talk to others and it is easier to be social.

  17. 17 James

I did not by pink!. I did by the silver about 2 months ago after reading some reviews on your website. I had a little accident last week and flipped my V Star 1100 three times and I flipped twice. The first for me was directly on my head. The clear face shield came off but the rest of the helmet is perfect. The sun visor, which was up at the time took no damage. I am very pleased with this helmet and would buy another one.

  18. 18 Chris

These look great! I really like the inside flip up shield, it remindes me of my OLD Kiwi CP4, where the whole shield did the same. HOWEVER, I have been burned by an EBAY helmet purchase because I couldn’t look/feel for my self. My question is ar the chinbar latches plastic/plastic, plastic/metal or metal/metal?

PS A friend of mine had a 70 MPH over the handlebars crash, the sheild on his FF broke off(and his crushed Raybans went spiraling out[his words]). Helmet still saved his life. The shield coming loose in a crash is fairly common.
