first cool ride
Published by Crystal December 17th, 2004 in cold weather riding.Yesterday I did my first long-ish ride of 44 miles. Started out at about 32 degrees and warmed up to 40-something. I wore snow pants, a down jacket, heavy gloves, windproof neck thingie, and I added a breath-box ($7.99) to my full-face helmet which diverts breath down so the screen doesn’t fog. With the exception of occasionally having a hard time getting the scoot on the center stand and persistant bursitis pain, it was fun, and I stayed warm (which I partly attribute to the exercise of trying to get the scoot on the stand multiple times). I don’t know if it’s tough because it’s heavier than the Metro (60 pounds more, plus it carries an additional gallon+ of gas), because I’m short, or still weak from the accident, or because I feel like if I pull any harder, I’m just going to flip the thing over so I tend to be too gentle. I’ve learned to look for a parking place that has a little downhill, and park facing up the hill, which makes the process easier. Maybe a side stand is in order.
