Now here’s a classic. A reader, Mario from southern California, sent me these before (click on the little pic for a larger view) and after photos of his 1986 Honda Elite 150 Deluxe that he restored and painted himself. Not only does he have one of the coolest scooters on the beach, he’s also helped found a new scooter group for his area: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Beach_Cities_Scooter_Club/

Hi, I have a 1985 elite 150 that ran great till now but I have a problem and hope maybe I can get a tip from you.
When I crank the engine without giving any gas it starts for about couple seconds and then it dies and if I try to give it gas it dies faster; the battery is new and it has spark and gas in the tank.
Any idea of what could be the problem?
    Thanks
    German

needs to have the carb cleaned, maybe gas tank too (might have rust). First, check the tank for rust, then have the carb cleaned and do tune up. Good luck. Glen

Hi, I also have a 1986 Honda Elite 150 Deluxe, it starts and runs for about 2 seconds and dies. I have put new gas in it and it will run for about a minute if I start it with starter fluid and keep the rpm’s up, as soon as I relax the rpm’s it dies again. No rust in tank, fresh gas, what could be wrong with it. It only has 1400 original miles and looks like new.
Please let me know if anyone has any idea what could be wrong.

    Thank you,

    Russ

    Russ,
Your concern might be with your carb..check the tubing of your carb..it might lack of tubing better have it check with the pro mechanic
    good luck

I had one of the ‘87 (?) models (really spacey looking thing) that I put over 18,000 miles on. Ran into 3 issues with the thing over the years:

    1. The intake manifold would crack and leak. The Honda replacement had reinforcing in the bad spot and never did it again.

    2. Bad coil. Went through 2 of those until I got one that worked for more than a year.

    3. Bad CDI unit. Replace this item twice as well.

Look at #1 first. #2/#3 usually manifested themselves by the thing starting and running fine and then dying for no apparent reason after it warmed-up. You’d have to let it cool completely down before it would start again! If you managed to get it going after this problem, it would run for a bit and then die.

We are rebuilding a honda elite 150 delux. Also had that two second start and then it would die. I fixed it twice by compleatly cleaning the carburator. That was it. Runs like there is no tomorrow.
